5 Soft Skills Every Employer Wants in a Candidate

We spend a lot of time focusing on the hard skills that candidates need to perform their job duties. Things like computer skills, industry knowledge, and how to use particular equipment are all extremely important. But it’s vital to consider the soft skills, too. And employers want to see certain soft skills in every candidate, regardless of the particular role.  

Here are five soft skills that every employer wants to see in their job candidates:  

#1: Interpersonal skills 

No matter what sort of role you’re working in, it’s likely you’ll be working directly with others at some point or another. That’s why interpersonal skills are so important. Strong interpersonal skills allow you to get along with everyone else on your team, connecting with others effectively, and communicating in ways that foster a positive work environment and culture.  

#2: Emotional intelligence 

Emotional intelligence, sometimes abbreviated as EQ, refers to your ability to manage your own emotions and take note of the emotions of others. What do you do when you get frustrated at work? How do you respond to an embarrassing situation? How might you help others when they’re experiencing these moments? Employees with high emotional intelligence tend to thrive and shine in the workplace.  

#3: Patience 

Patience is definitely a virtue in most jobs, yours included. Employers want to know that their candidates have a high level of patience because it’s absolutely crucial in all sorts of non-clinical and clinical healthcare roles. As a candidate, make it clear how you respond when you’re under a tight deadline, or how you’ll deal with a coworker who is dropping the ball. It’s one of those soft skills that set the best employees apart from the crowd.  

#4: Conflict resolution 

Conflict resolution is an important skill to have, especially if you’re in a leadership role or would like to move into one in the future. Being able to resolve conflicts peacefully through proper communication is essential. There’s a reason most interviews include a question like, “Tell me about a time you disagreed with a coworker.”  

#5: Flexibility and adaptability 

If there’s one thing you’ll need in your healthcare role, it’s the ability to be adaptable and flexible. Being able to adjust on the fly is a crucial skill to have. It will set you apart from the competition in almost every situation.
